It takes tremendous courage to build a life as a writer.

Rejection and criticism are unavoidable parts of the job. Your inner critic sometimes sends you spiraling, making it easy to doubt the value of the work. Even on days when the words flow, you might yearn for more authentic confidence in your voice and vision.

In my 19 years of working closely with authors, I’ve seen self-doubt arise in many ways. I’ve also been proud to enable brave creative leaps. It’s thrilling to watch writers radically improve their relationship to their craft. I spent a year training and getting certified as a coach to even better empower writers and creative people.

What is coaching?

Coaching is not the same as therapy, but coaching sessions with me might feel similar to talk therapy, with a special focus on illuminating your path to creative fulfillment.

As a coach, I can help you

  • rekindle joy in your creative practice

  • befriend your inner critic

  • deepen your understanding of what truly inspires you

  • align and balance your writing with everything else you do

  • shape goals and create systems of accountability

  • cultivate the courage to advocate for your needs

  • bring more ease, purpose, and passion to your work

My training is in Coaching for Transformation, a certification program through Leadership that Works India, accredited by the International Coaching Federation. Anyone can offer coaching services, but CFT-graduate coaches have completed intensive training and adhere to strict ethical guidelines.

How it works

Together, we can design a coaching plan that fits your schedule and meets your unique needs. Every plan is different, but coaching sessions are typically 60 minutes, every other week. To create meaningful change in your creative practice, I suggest a commitment of at least three months. We meet over the phone or on Zoom, whichever you prefer. Between sessions, you have the option to email me as much as you wish.

Testimonials

“Abby helped me rediscover the joy in my writing experience.

She listened so deeply, and asked questions that ultimately helped me move past frustrations and into a more productive and satisfying process. If I’m ever stuck, or struggling, or just need to connect in this sometimes solitary writer’s existence, I know exactly who to reach out to.”

“Abby has discovered her calling and I feel so lucky to have found her.

Change, introspection and honesty on the page is hard work, but it’s easier to do when you have someone like Abby rooting for you and keeping you from lying to yourself. Think about the way you feel after you read a book you love—that same feeling is what I’m experiencing as I learn to trust myself and my writing. Thanks to Abby, I’m becoming the creative force I’ve always imagined.”

“Even if you think you don’t need a coach, believe me, you could use a coach like Abby.

Her insight, flexibility, attention to detail, and ability to make connections between wildly divergent and abstract thought processes is formidable, impressive, and, most importantly, unbelievably instructive. After 15 years “in the field,” I feel like I have a much stronger understanding of my own process and obstacles—and, with Abby’s help, a clear strategy for moving through them.”
